Several decades of conglomeration have left the
health insurance industry a very different animal than it once
was. Where in decades past numerous small, local providers
offered affordable healthcare, now, in an age of every increasing
health care costs, one out of three Americans get their insurance
from one of only seven companies. With a lock on the industry
and little to no government oversight or anti-trust legislation,
health insurers have been able to charge pretty much whatever
they want. And that’s bad news for anybody with something
serious. You know, like cancer.
